米国TVショーでのライブです。
"Sheryl Crow"は1962年生まれの米国のシンガーソングライターです。
父は弁護士ですが、トランペット奏者でもあり、母親はピアノ講師であるので
音楽に囲まれた幼少期を送っています。と同時にスポーツにも秀でていた才女で、
作曲、演奏、教育の学士をコロンビア大学で取得しています。
プロとしての音楽活動は作曲が最初でした。CMの為の作曲を20代の早い時期から
始めています。
24歳でカリフォルニアに移転し、翌1987年からはビッグネームのバックコーラスを
勤めるようになり、"Michael Jackson"のツアーのコーラスも務めています。
その後"Tuesday Music Club"に参加するようになって
"Bill Bottrell", "David Baerwald"と親しくなりアルバムを制作することになったのです。
この歌詞は彼女が米国社会を見たときに感じられる90年初頭の状況を
皮肉的に（否定ではなく）歌ったのだと思われます。
70年代後半以降、L.A.を中心とした西海岸地区は中西部地域のよく"ラストベルト"と
言われる地区を抜いて最も人口の多い地域でした。
衰退した生産人口は経済の潤いがある西海岸に流出し、
かつて人気を博した米国のテレビドラマ『大草原の小さな家』にみられる
道徳的価値観から『享楽を求めるがゆえに富を求める』価値観の肯定に
向かっていました。
