息子が言った
「父さん、フォークランド紛争へ行かされることになった。

精一杯の気力を振り絞り
必死になって海に潜る
真珠を採りに潜ることだってできるというのに

1982年3月からイギリスとアルゼンチンのあいだで3ヶ月に及んだ
戦争～フォークランド紛争～がありました。
『運が良ければ帰ってくる（絵葉書）、そうでなければ死亡通知（電報）
人を殺しに行く船をつくりに造船所で働く。
そしてそれは息子を戦地にいかすことになるのだ』
1983年その真っただ中にいた"Costello"の切なる想いをこめた反戦歌です。
息子が語った言葉『でも、クリスマスまでには帰るよ。』は
第二次大戦の時、英国軍人が参戦時に使った言葉なのだそうです。
しかし実際にはクリスマスまでには帰れなかった。
ずっと帰れなかった人もいた。
"Robert Wyatt"のヴァージョン
最初は彼に渡した曲でした。
動画内で"Robert Wyatt"が車椅子であることがわかります。
彼はドラマーとして"Canterbury rock"派のミュージシャンとして活動していましたが、
1973年に事故で半身不随になり、その後シンガーとして活動したのです。
